15 Animals That Can Predict Natural Disasters

by | Apr 26, 2021 | Pet Training

Looking in to the world of animals is an incredible way to see how Mother Nature can impact our daily lives. These creatures are so amazing, they seem to be able to predict natural disasters just by looking at their surroundings. This article will take a look at 11 animals that can predict natural disasters and why we should all start paying attention to them.

For example:

Elephants never forget a scent, which means they’re incredibly good at remembering the predators in their surroundings and avoiding them before danger strikes. They also have such a strong family bond, they never forget each other! That’s why if you save an elephant’s life, the entire family will remember. The same can be said about dolphins: if you save a dolphin, the entire pod will remember that kind act.

When animals go underground during an earthquake, that’s a pretty clear sign something may be wrong. Snakes and other reptiles are known to sense earthquakes before they happen because their bodies are so sensitive to subtle changes in the ground. They’re just one of many animals that react differently before an earthquake actually takes place.

1. Dogs

Dogs are known to be incredibly smart and loyal animals. They can tell when their owners are ill, especially when the owner isn’t feeling well enough to take care of them. Dogs are also able to sense other changes in the environment, which is why they can sense earthquake tremors before they happen.

2. Cats

Cats have a really keen sense of hearing, which is why they’re able to predict earthquakes before they happen. If you’ve ever owned a cat before and noticed that they tend to hide under furniture or in small spaces right before an earthquake (and your family told you it’s just your imagination), there’s actually a reason behind it!

3. Horses

Horses have the ability to predict earthquakes and other natural disasters because they can sense subtle changes in the ground. They’re also very intelligent animals, so if you ever notice that your horses are acting strangely before a natural disaster takes place, it might be your hint that something is about to go terribly wrong.

4. Cows

For many years, people around the world claimed that cows were acting strangely before an earthquake took place. These claims were often ignored, since no one understood why the cows were acting that way. After careful research and studies, we now know they can sense earthquakes before they happen because of pressure changes taking place in the atmosphere.

5. Elephants

Elephants have an excellent sense of smell, which is why they’re able to sniff out predators before they even attack. If your elephants are acting weird before an earthquake takes place, it’s likely due to them sensing a change in the air.

6. Rodents

The following rodents are known to predict earthquakes by detecting subtle changes in the atmosphere. These animals are sensitive to changes in air pressure or vibrations, which is why they’re able to detect the signs of a natural disaster before it happens.

For example:

Why were rats seen going under objects before earthquakes? It all boils down to their use of echolocation. Each animal emits a high pitched noise that bounces off different objects as the sound wave exits their body. If the sound wave bounces off an object when they are heading in a certain direction, they will avoid it and go under the object. This is why rats go under objects before earthquakes.

Rats aren’t the only rodents that are known to predict earthquakes by using echolocation, though. Hamsters and gerbils can also do this by emitting a high pitched chirp that bounces off of their surroundings before an earthquake takes place. If you ever notice your hamster or gerbil emitting a strange chirping sound right before an earthquake takes place, it might be due to them sensing subtle air pressure changes or other vibrations in their environment.

7. Flamingos

Flamingos are able to sense water currents because of the sensors in their beaks. These sensors can detect shifts in water pressure, which is why they’re able to predict natural disasters.

8. Bees

The bees that work on farms are actually very sensitive to changes in the air. If you notice a certain type of bee flying at an odd angle inside of a hive, it’s likely due to the bees sensing an unnatural change in the air.

9. Bats

Humans aren’t the only ones who use echolocation to predict natural disasters! Bats use it, too! This is because they have an excellent sense of hearing, which is why they can detect subtle shifts in the environment.

11. Dolphins

Dolphins have an exceptional sense of hearing and an incredible sense of smell. They’re also able to detect changes in water pressure, which is why they’re able to predict earthquakes before they actually take place. If you ever notice your dolphins acting strange before a natural disaster strikes, stay alert. It may be due to them sensing something in the air or water that humans can’t detect.

12. Snakes

Snakes are one of the most intelligent creatures on Earth because they can predict earthquakes and other natural disasters. Not only do snakes have a keen sense of hearing, but they also use their sense of smell to detect changes in the air.

Someday, scientists might be able use this ability to predict natural disasters before they happen, as well as help people escape from a building after an earthquake has taken place. Scientists would be able to study snake behavior and then develop ways for humans to use this information to make escape routes safer. (Related: Check out these natural disaster survival gear tips.)

13. Sharks

Sharks can predict natural disasters because they are able to sense electromagnetic changes in the environment. According to researchers, sharks can sense low frequency geomagnetic fluctuations that humans aren’t able to sense for a variety of reasons. (Related: These animals can predict earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis.)

Scientists have found that some species of sharks are sensitive to magnetic fields because they excrete a special type of molecule that acts like a compass. By sensing this ability, the shark will be able to know which direction it’s heading without having to turn its head from side to side. This helps the shark stay on course while swimming underwater.

14. Turtles

How can turtles predict natural disasters? It’s because they rely on their native environment to communicate with them. For example, a turtle may have learned from her mother that if she sees a certain type of leaf falling from the tree, then it’s probably safe to return to the water. If the leaf is different and shaped differently, then she should stay on land until more information is available.

Turtles are also able to sense electromagnetic changes in the environment because they’re sensitive to changes in the Earth’s magnetic field. They’re so sensitive that they can detect these changes even thousands of miles away from the actual source of change!

15. Salmon

Certain species of salmon can predict natural disasters because they’re sensitive to changes in the Earth’s magnetic field. For instance, according to a study conducted by scientists at Stanford University, some salmon are able to sense the presence of a tsunami long before it’s actually on land.

In the study, researchers noticed that a female sockeye salmon first started moving toward deeper water as soon as she began noticing that there was no incoming wave of water coming from the beach. She could feel this in her gills and snout.
