by | Apr 25, 2021 | Pet Adoption

This article highlights the top 10 most popular pet bird breeds and why you should get them as a pet. Each of these birds has different characteristics which suit different personalities and hobbies.

1. Budgerigars

Also known as “parakeets” or “budgies,” these little birds are very easy to care for and can live happily in pairs or flocks of up to ten birds. They are also pretty cheap to buy, which is great for those on a budget!

The Budgerigar is a species of parakeet that is native to Australia. It has been domesticated and bred in captivity, and many of its color variations have become popular in the pet trade.

The first captive bred Budgerigars were exported from Australia to England in 1894, but they were not popular with bird-keepers until the 1930s when selective breeding began producing varieties with different body colors including yellow, blue, white, and green.
Since then these birds have become very common as pets around the world due to their relatively small size (10 inches long) that makes their cages easy to accommodate and handle. The large range of colors and patterns available today makes them excellent options for those that don’t have the time or money to research and choose a specific color.

2. African Greys

Also known as Congo African greys, these birds are extremely intelligent and will do pretty much anything you tell them to do. They are also quite playful at times, which makes them great for those that enjoy the companionship of a feathered friend.

African Grey Parrots are one of the best talking birds on Earth. They usually start to talk at the age of 4-5 months old but they can speak as young as age 1 year (sometimes they don’t speak until they reach 3 years).

Chinese are probably the most expensive popular pet in the world, and African greys are second.
The average cost for a hand-raised parrot is $1300-$1800. Hand raised means that it was handled by humans from birth and has been tamed to not bite or nip while also being tamed enough that it can be handled without getting scared and biting you. The wild caught parrots cost $300-$600.

African Greys are characterized as reliable, loving companions that make excellent pets for those that want an active pet. They are very intelligent, extremely affectionate, and highly trainable birds. Their intelligence makes them a great choice for people that have many different needs. They can be taught to talk and trained to do many tricks.

3. Cockatoos

The first Canary, the “Canary Yellow”, was bred in 1875 in England. The color can be caused by a genetic mutation that causes yellow pigment cells to have reduced amounts of red pigment cells, making the Canary more yellow than orange.

9. Caiques

10. Lovebirds

Also known as “blue and gold macaws,” these beautiful birds are extremely affectionate and people often get them because they think they will be like the parrots they see on television. In reality, though, lovebirds aren’t actually like parrots at all.

The lovebird is a small parrot with an iridescent blue and green head, a bright yellow body, and two broad tails. Its natural habitat is Africa. The lovebird was originally thought to have originated in South America, existing most recently in the Amazon region of Brazil or southern Colombia. It has since been introduced to other parts of the world including Europe, North America and Asia.
